The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has accused China of using automatic identification system (AIS) spoofing to mislead the public and create confusion. This follows reports from residents in San Felipe, Zambales, who spotted a vessel they believed to be from the China Coast Guard. PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela stated that the Chinese Coast Guard is manipulating AIS data to deceive authorities and the international community. He noted that the vessel's navigation patterns appear unrealistic, suggesting it may be exploiting signals from other ships. In response to the concerns, Cmdr. Euphraim Jayson Diciano of the PCG in Zambales assured residents that all vessels would be monitored closely. He indicated that the sighting of the suspected Chinese vessel might have been a technical error.
