Philippine lawmakers threaten vloggers with contempt charges
Lawmakers in Manila are warning social media personalities that they may face legal action if they do not attend the next hearing on fake news. This event is scheduled for April 8. The decision follows a recent inquiry where many vloggers did not show up. Joseph Stephen Paduano, the Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts, issued this warning. He expressed concerns during a hearing, stressing the importance of participation from all invited guests. He cautioned that ignoring the invitation could lead to contempt charges. Subpoenas will be issued to 24 vloggers who missed the previous hearing despite being told to attend. Out of 11 figures initially subpoenaed, only eight attended. Some tried to join remotely, but the House only permits this for its members. Former Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles mentioned that one notable vlogger was in China during the hearing. Paduano emphasized the need for a valid written explanation for absences. Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel reinforced that failing to appear at the next hearing would result in further legal consequences.
