Philippine officials urge free motorcycle training for safety
Transport officials in the Philippines are urging the government to offer free training for motorcycle riders. This recommendation comes after a report by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) revealed that motorcycles were involved in a significant number of traffic accidents in Metro Manila. In 2023, 36,486 motorcycle accidents were reported, which represented over 22% of all traffic incidents. The MMDA also noted that these accidents resulted in 271 fatalities. During a press conference, George Royeca, CEO of Angkas, highlighted that many accidents occur due to a lack of proper training for riders before they receive their licenses. Royeca emphasized the importance of free training, as many riders cannot afford to pay for it. He noted that motorcycles are often the only mode of transportation for individuals who cannot buy cars. Quezon City Councilor Wency Lagumbay also supported the call for training, but he pointed out challenges in regulating motorcycle use on national roads within the city. Lagumbay mentioned that while smaller local roads could be managed, enforcement on major roads would be difficult. He stressed that the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is responsible for implementing rules and regulations. Edwin Go, President of the Motorcycle Dealers Association, stated that dealers require riders to have a driver’s license to ensure safety. Both Royeca and Lagumbay agreed that better training and education are necessary for motorcycle riders. They called for action from the Department of Transportation to improve compliance and safety for motorcycle users, emphasizing that many Filipinos rely on motorcycles for their livelihoods.
