Philippine think tank warns of U.S. visit's risks
A think tank in the Philippines has expressed concern about the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG) believes the visit could threaten the country’s national sovereignty and security. CenPEG argues that foreign military presence increases tensions and the risk of conflict in the region. Chairman Roland Simbulan stated that the Philippines is becoming involved in the rivalries between larger powers like the U.S., China, and Russia. He emphasized the need for the country to maintain its independence and not let foreign military powers influence its security policies. The organization called on the Philippine government to prioritize national sovereignty. They suggested reducing dependence on foreign military alliances and focusing on self-reliance in defense and diplomacy. Simbulan highlighted the importance of redirecting resources to help improve the lives of Filipinos instead of increasing foreign military presence. In contrast, the Armed Forces of the Philippines welcomed Hegseth’s visit. An AFP spokesperson described it as a reaffirmation of the U.S.'s strong support and commitment to the Philippines. They view the visit as an opportunity for military exercises and collaboration. Hegseth is set to meet with Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on March 28. This visit is part of efforts to strengthen alliances and security objectives in the Indo-Pacific region.
