Philippine volcano eruption forces evacuations as ash blankets homes
A significant eruption of Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines sent ash and gases three kilometers high, prompting residents to evacuate to emergency shelters. Authorities reported no immediate casualties but closed schools and imposed a nighttime curfew. Disaster-response officials raised the danger level around the volcano, warning of a greater risk of hazardous activity. Evacuations were ordered for those within a six-kilometer radius, with about 100 people already displaced. The Philippines' Institute of Volcanology and Seismology indicated that the eruption could lead to more explosive activity. Mount Kanlaon is one of the country's most active volcanoes, with its last eruption occurring in June.
