Philippines and South Korea sign deal to study revival of Bataan nuclear power plant

The Philippines and South Korea have signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study on reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). This initiative aims to enhance energy security in the Philippines, which currently relies heavily on coal. The BNPP was completed in 1984 but never operated due to safety concerns and corruption allegations. The feasibility study, set to begin in January 2025, will assess the plant's condition and explore refurbishment options. Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. will cover all study costs, and the Philippine government is not obligated to proceed based on the findings. Previous studies in 2008 and 2017 did not advance due to public opposition to nuclear energy.
