Philippines calls for stronger defense in West Philippine Sea
MANILA – The head of the Department of National Defense (DND), Gilberto Teodoro Jr., said on Monday that the Philippines needs to improve its defense strategies against threats in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). He made these comments during a speech at the 49th anniversary celebration of the Western Command based in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Teodoro emphasized the importance of united efforts among the military, government, and the Filipino people to protect the country's rights and interests in the area. He also praised the Western Command for its commitment to securing the WPS amid growing geopolitical tensions. According to DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong, Teodoro highlighted the need for improved regional collaborations. He noted that internal security operations must adapt to new challenges from outside forces that threaten the Philippines' territorial integrity and maritime claims. Teodoro also addressed the issue of China's claims in the South China Sea, dismissing their "10-dash line" as a false narrative that no ASEAN country recognizes as legitimate. He reaffirmed the Philippines' dedication to building strong international partnerships with countries like Japan, the United States, and other ASEAN members to maintain a rules-based international order.
