Philippines considers military use of Subic Bay islands
The Philippines is looking to enhance its security in the South China Sea by potentially turning two islands in Subic Bay into military bases. The islands, Grande and Chiquita, are in a key location that could help monitor important sea routes. Officials believe Grande Island has a good vantage point to observe areas in the West Philippine Sea, including Scarborough Shoal. This is significant as tensions in the region are rising. Both islands are at the entrance of Subic Bay, about 100 kilometers from Manila. Subic Bay was once a major American naval base until 1992, when U.S. forces left after the Philippine government chose not to renew their lease. Despite this, the bay remains vital for military activities, with Philippine and U.S. forces using it for refueling and repairs. The port also plays a role in bringing U.S. military gear into the country for joint exercises. Experts note that while this plan may face legal and logistical challenges, strong political support could make it possible.
