Philippines evacuates thousands as Typhoon Toraji approaches northern region
The Philippines is evacuating thousands from 2,500 villages in the north as Typhoon Toraji approaches. This follows severe flooding and landslides from three storms in the past month, which caused over 160 deaths and affected more than 9 million people. Typhoon Toraji, with winds up to 130 kilometers per hour, is expected to hit the mountainous Luzon region. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla ordered the evacuations, citing increased risks of flash floods and landslides in already rain-soaked areas. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is overseeing recovery efforts and has received aid from Southeast Asian nations and the United States. The Philippines frequently faces natural disasters, including typhoons and earthquakes.
