Philippines launches UN border security platform for detection

inquirer.net

The Philippines has officially launched a new border security platform to help detect terrorists and criminals before they enter the country. This makes the Philippines the first Southeast Asian nation and the seventh overall to adopt this United Nations initiative. The ceremony took place at the Department of Justice, led by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (Unoct). The platform, named goTravel, is based on a system developed in the Netherlands. With this technology, authorities can access advanced passenger information and check it against security watch lists. Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado emphasized that this system will provide real-time information. This means authorities will know about potential threats even before passengers arrive. The platform aims to strengthen cooperation among local and international law enforcement agencies. It also ensures that personal data privacy is protected while enhancing security measures. The BI noted that countries like Norway, Luxembourg, Georgia, and Botswana have also adopted similar systems. Currently, Cebu Pacific is the first airline to integrate with goTravel. Other airlines, including Philippine Airlines, are expected to participate soon. The BI has also successfully tested connections with Interpol's databases, which will help in identifying potential security threats. Unoct official Christine Bradley mentioned that the system can detect risks ahead of time, allowing authorities to plan appropriate responses. This includes monitoring or apprehending individuals flagged in security alerts.
