Philippines strengthens defense ties with India, acquiring BrahMos
Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo spoke about the strengthening relationship between India and the Philippines in an interview with Times Now. The focus of the discussion was on defense cooperation, particularly the purchase of BrahMos missiles from India. Manalo acknowledged that the acquisition of BrahMos missiles marks a significant advancement in the defense capabilities of the Philippines. He expressed satisfaction with this development and mentioned that further purchases may be considered in the future, pending assessments by defense officials. The Secretary also emphasized the importance of joint naval exercises between the Indian and Philippine navies. This cooperation aims to enhance maritime security in the South China Sea, an area increasingly challenged by China's assertive claims. He noted recent tensions regarding Scarborough Shoal, a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen. China has claimed authority over this area, leading to disruptions for local fishermen and legal disputes under international law. Manalo highlighted that the situation is not unique to the Philippines, as other nations like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan face similar challenges from China's maritime claims. He reiterated that the Philippines is committed to resolving these tensions through diplomatic means while upholding its sovereign rights. Looking ahead, he mentioned plans for a possible visit by the Philippine President to India later this year, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This visit could further strengthen ties between the two nations.
