Physicians in Shanxi show gaps in knowledge and practice on H. pylori resistance
A study of 518 physicians in Shanxi, China, found suboptimal knowledge and practices regarding Helicobacter pylori antibiotic resistance, despite generally positive attitudes, highlighting a need for targeted education. The multicenter study, conducted from August to October 2024, revealed mean knowledge and practice scores below optimal thresholds, while attitude scores were positive. Knowledge and attitude scores, along with department affiliation, were independently associated with practice, with non-gastroenterology physicians showing particularly low performance. Researchers identified specific knowledge gaps, including pediatric treatment and antibiotic alternatives for penicillin-allergic patients. The findings suggest targeted educational interventions are urgently needed, especially for non-specialist physicians and those outside tertiary centers, to improve evidence-based management of H. pylori infection in the region.
