Pisgah girls' soccer improves after winless last season
The Pisgah girls' soccer team is having a much better season compared to last year. Last year, they finished without any wins, going 0-19. So far this season, they have already achieved one win and one draw. On Wednesday, Pisgah played against Smoky Mountain, who had a strong record of 7-1. The game was important for measuring how much the Bears have improved. Although Pisgah lost 3-1, their coach, Rocky Heath, believes it was their best game yet. He noted that the players are slowly making small improvements. Pisgah started strong when freshman Delaney Pifer assisted senior Estefany Castillo-Pina for an early goal. Coach Heath mentioned that having the wind advantage helped them early in the game. However, Smoky Mountain scored two goals before halftime, leading 2-1 at the break. Pisgah had several chances to score as well. In the second half, Pisgah maintained good momentum. Pifer's speed on the front line is proving to be a challenge for opponents, and the team is focusing on improving individual skills in practice. Senior Paloma Ramirez, who is the starting goalie this season, made several key saves despite being new to the position. Heath feels optimistic about the team's future. He believes there is less pressure this year and that they can win four to six conference games. For him, the progress in skill and teamwork is encouraging. He is using soccer to teach the players important life skills and is confident they will achieve more wins by the end of the season.
