Plant milk may cause digestive issues for some
Many people, especially young adults, are now choosing plant-based milk instead of cow's milk. However, some have reported gut issues like bloating after drinking soy and almond milk for a long time. Dr. Vishal Khurana, an expert in gastroenterology, explains that while animal milk has lactose, which can be hard for some to digest, it also offers important nutrients. Cow’s milk is rich in protein, calcium, vitamin D, and iodine. These nutrients help keep the gut healthy. Protein aids in cell repair, calcium helps with digestion, and vitamin D supports the immune system within the gut. On the other hand, plant-based milks often need added nutrients to match animal milk’s levels, and not all brands do this effectively. Lactose, the sugar in dairy milk, can be good for gut health for those who can digest it. It helps beneficial bacteria in the gut produce substances that reduce inflammation. Animal milk also contains special compounds that act like food for good gut bacteria. These compounds can help keep the gut barrier strong, which prevents harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. Unfortunately, plant milks do not have lactose or these beneficial compounds. When buying plant milk, it’s important to check for added sugars, which can worsen gut health. Some brands also use additives and emulsifiers to improve texture, but these can disrupt gut health. In contrast, animal milk typically has fewer additives and is gentler on the digestive system for most people. Plant-based milks can be good for those with allergies or ethical concerns. Yet, they lack the unique nutrients and compounds found in animal milk that benefit gut health. If you choose plant milk, it’s best to pick options that are less processed.
