PM launches Recharge Pakistan to combat climate risks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the government's Recharge Pakistan initiative on World Water Day, which aims to address challenges from climate change. He emphasized that the plan seeks to manage flood risks and reduce drought impacts through nature-based solutions. In his message, the Prime Minister mentioned the Living Indus initiative, which includes 25 key projects. These projects cover areas like sustainable agriculture, restoration of the Indus delta, and reducing industrial pollution. He highlighted that water is crucial for life and vital to economies and environments. Sharif noted that nearly half of the world's population faces water scarcity at times, with many lacking access to clean drinking water. He pointed out that pollution levels are rising and stressed that wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. The Prime Minister expressed that Pakistan is heavily impacted by climate change, experiencing severe droughts and floods. He stated that about 80% of the country is arid or semi-arid, affecting a significant portion of the population. Sharif reminded everyone that more than three-quarters of Pakistan's water sources come from outside its borders. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of international cooperation on water management, particularly the Indus Waters Treaty. On this World Water Day, he called for continued efforts to protect glaciers and water resources. He urged collective action to create a secure and resilient water future for Pakistan and beyond.
