Policeman's son detained for senior citizen's hit-and-run

A police officer's son has been detained in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of an 85-year-old man in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. The victim, Balraj Permanand Mehra, was struck by a two-wheeler while walking along Dr. Annie Besant Road. He was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries the following day. The police questioned Yash Nandkumar Gavkar, a chef and the driver of the vehicle involved. He admitted that his vehicle hit Mehra but claimed he offered help, which Mehra declined, saying his staff would assist him. Witnesses helped the police trace the vehicle to Gavkar. Initially, the police believe the incident was accidental, but they are still investigating. Gavkar has been charged with negligence causing death and rash driving, which are bailable offenses. He was released after receiving a notice. Mehra's family is suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his death. They recall his ongoing legal issues with a builder over a disputed property. Mehra had alleged threats and attempts to take over the property in past legal actions. Mehra's daughter, Anita Sharma, who lives in the U.S., arrived in Mumbai in February and was informed of her father's accident on March 16. Eyewitnesses reported they found Mehra heavily bleeding and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died.
