Political interference hinders Nagpur riot investigations
Police in Nagpur are facing challenges in their investigation of recent riots due to political interference. On March 17, a violent incident led to injuries for 40 officers, prompting ongoing probes into 13 riot cases. However, sources say that political leaders are complicating these investigations by trying to protect individuals they know. Officers are struggling to maintain their morale as they deal with requests from politicians to release certain suspects, who are linked to the riots. Many police feel that their ability to conduct fair and effective investigations is being compromised. A senior officer shared concerns that each time they explain their position to one leader, another one quickly steps in to create further obstacles. The interference has become so excessive that some investigations have been moved from local police to outside agencies to avoid direct political pressure. Recently, a political leader entered a police station with supporters to express anger over arrests related to the riots. This leader questioned how officers from one community could investigate another. Former politicians have also attempted to influence investigations, demanding the release of suspects before inquiries were even completed. Police officers report that these interruptions waste valuable time and hinder their efforts to deliver justice. Despite external pressure, the police are committed to carrying out their duties, though they are frustrated by unnecessary debates and confrontations that delay the process.
