Polk County wildfires prompt immediate evacuation orders
Polk County is facing serious wildfires that have rapidly expanded. Officials are telling some residents to "leave now" as the fires have grown significantly. The Deep Woods Fire near Holbert Cove Road has increased to over 1,100 acres with no containment. This surge in size occurred within eight hours, fueled by low humidity and difficult terrain. The county has ordered mandatory evacuations for the Piney Gate area to ensure safety. Officials warn that staying behind could result in being trapped or injured, as visibility is poor and roads may be blocked. Another fire, known as the Black Cove Fire, has also nearly doubled in size, reaching over 1,000 acres. Firefighters are currently using helicopters and planes to assist in controlling these blazes. Meanwhile, a newer fire called the Fish Hook fire, which started from a downed power line, has decreased in size but has destroyed three homes and a garage. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for high fire danger across several counties, including Polk. This alert will be in effect until late Saturday, warning of low humidity levels and dry conditions that exacerbate the fire risk. Local officials are asking for donations to support families affected by the fires and to help firefighters. Supplies such as bottled water and snacks are particularly needed. Donations can be made at specific community locations, but not at fire stations, to minimize distractions for the emergency responders.
