Poniros wins 100-1 Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham
Willie Mullins' horse, Poniros, has caught attention after an unexpected victory at Cheltenham. Poniros, who was a long shot at 100-1, won the Triumph Hurdle race last Friday. The horse, owned by Brighton supremo Tony Bloom, was making his debut in hurdling. This win marks Poniros as the biggest-priced Cheltenham Festival winner in 35 years. The horse surpassed Nicky Henderson’s Lulamba to claim the Grade 1 title. Betting enthusiasts are now eagerly anticipating a rematch in the Champion Hurdle at the upcoming Punchestown Festival next month. Poniros previously raced in flat competitions and was trained by Ralph Beckett. After this notable win, his racing future is being carefully planned. Sean Graham, Bloom’s racing manager, mentioned discussions with Mullins and assistant trainer David Casey about possibly racing at Punchestown. Graham noted that the team would assess how Poniros recovers from this race before making any decisions. He emphasized that even if Poniros had finished mid-division, they would still be pleased with his performance. If all goes well, Poniros could continue racing at Punchestown or even Royal Ascot later on.
