Poor countries express anger over Cop29 climate finance deal shortfall
At the Cop29 climate conference in Baku, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new climate finance goal. Rich nations will provide $300 billion annually to poorer countries by 2035, but this amount is significantly less than the $1.3 trillion requested. The funding will come from various sources, including loans, which developing countries argue traps them in debt. Many poorer nations are frustrated as they face severe climate impacts despite contributing little to global emissions. The UN estimates developing countries need $5 trillion to $6.9 trillion to implement climate plans by 2030. The current financial system is seen as favoring wealthy nations, leaving poorer countries to bear the brunt of climate change consequences.
