Port Douglas evolves from quaint village to tourist hub with new eco-friendly focus
Port Douglas has changed significantly since the 1980s, when it was a quaint village. The development of the Sheraton Mirage resort transformed it into a busy tourist destination, altering its original character. While some local landmarks like Nautilus restaurant and Mocka’s pie shop remain, the town now features many shops catering to tourists. Minibuses frequently transport visitors to various resorts and motels. The area is surrounded by the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef, both cared for by the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. The Sheraton Grand Mirage opened in 1988, shortly after the Daintree received World Heritage status.
