Prayagraj's groundwater crisis worsens; two blocks critical
Prayagraj, also known as Sangam city, is facing a serious groundwater crisis. A recent report from the Ground Water Department indicates that many areas are over-exploiting their groundwater resources. Out of the 23 development blocks in the city, two are labeled as 'critical' and eight as 'semi-critical.' The two critical blocks are Chaka and Sahaso. The eight semi-critical blocks include Bahadurpur, Kaudihar, Saidabad, Mauaima, Phulpur, Pratappur, Shringverpur Dham, and Dhanupur. Overall, the city is classified as ‘over-exploited’ due to high levels of groundwater extraction without sufficient natural replenishment. Ravikant, in charge of the district's Ground Water Department, highlighted that the lack of groundwater refill is causing declining water levels in the area. Historical data shows a troubling trend in groundwater levels over the years. For example, the water level was measured at 15.65 meters below sea level in 2020, dropping even lower in subsequent years. Groundwater use is categorized based on how much of the recharged supply is consumed. Areas using up to 70% of recharged water are normal; 70% to 90% is semi-critical; and 90% to 100% is critical. If usage exceeds 100%, the area is over-exploited. In Prayagraj, urban groundwater use has surpassed 100%, while Chaka and Sahaso are in the critical range. Only 285 individuals and businesses in Prayagraj have installed rainwater harvesting systems to help combat this issue. This reflects a need for greater awareness and action to conserve water resources in the city.
