Pregnant horse hit by SUV in Pennsylvania
A pregnant horse was struck and killed by an SUV in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, early Friday morning. The driver, Galen Nye, 47, could not avoid the horse as it suddenly crossed the road. Following the accident, Nye parked his Subaru Forester about 150 feet away. The emergency responders discovered that the horse was pregnant and worked quickly to deliver the foal at the scene. They handed the newborn to the property owner for care. Nye only suffered minor injuries and did not need to go to the hospital. Sadly, the horse died on-site. Authorities have not provided updates on the foal's condition. A Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson confirmed the details of the incident and expressed their regret over the horse's death. State Farm, an insurance company, noted that the chances of hitting an animal while driving are 1 in 128. They recorded over 1.8 million claims related to animal collisions in the U.S. from mid-2023 to mid-2024, with Pennsylvania having the highest number of claims. Deer are the most commonly involved animals in these accidents, especially during November.
