Prem Chand Aggarwal resigns; Cabinet expansion anticipated in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal has resigned, causing speculations about a possible expansion of the state Cabinet. His resignation has left five empty positions in the Cabinet. Aggarwal held important roles, including finance and parliamentary affairs. His resignation followed controversial remarks he made during the Budget Session, which were viewed as disrespectful to the hill communities. The backlash led to public protests, including residents burning his effigy and calling for his removal. Currently, there are seven ministers left in the Cabinet, down from nine after the death of Minister Chandan Ram Das in April 2023. The remaining ministers are now handling multiple responsibilities, leading to discussions about an expansion of the Cabinet. Uttarakhand BJP President Mahendra Bhatt mentioned that he and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami agree that the timing is suitable for an increase in Cabinet size. Following his resignation, Aggarwal also vacated his official residence in Yamuna Colony, which has a reputation for bringing bad luck to its residents. This belief dates back to 2003, with previous occupants facing challenges after living there. In response to his resignation, members of the Vaishya community in Doiwala protested, closing shops and urging for his resignation to be overturned. Aggarwal met with the protesters, asking for their support to improve Uttarakhand.
