Private jet carbon emissions rise 46 percent from 2019 to 2023, study shows
A new study shows that carbon emissions from private jets increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023. The study found that wealthy individuals emitted 15.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide last year, equivalent to the emissions of 67 million people in Tanzania. The research analyzed over 18.6 million flights from about 26,000 private jets. While private jets account for only 1.8% of aviation's carbon pollution, the overall aviation sector contributes about 4% of human-caused greenhouse gases. The findings highlight the significant carbon footprint of private jet travel, raising concerns about fairness and environmental priorities among the wealthy.
