Private jet carbon emissions rise 46% from 2019 to 2023, study finds
Carbon emissions from private jets have increased significantly, rising 46% from 2019 to 2023. A new study reveals that wealthy individuals emitted 17.2 million tons of carbon dioxide last year, equivalent to the emissions of 67 million people in Tanzania. The study analyzed over 18.6 million flights from about 26,000 private jets. It found that just 1.8% of aviation emissions come from private jets, but the impact is notable, with some users emitting over 500 times the global average. Researchers suggest that addressing these emissions may require new taxes or fees on private jet use. The U.S. has the highest concentration of private jets, with Alaska leading in flights per capita.
