Private jet carbon emissions rise 46% from 2019 to 2023, study finds
A new study reveals that carbon emissions from private jets increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023. The research, published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment, shows that the wealthiest individuals contributed significantly to this rise, emitting 17.2 million tons of carbon dioxide last year. The study analyzed over 18.6 million flights and found that private jets account for 1.8% of aviation's carbon emissions. Notably, one individual emitted 2,645 tons of carbon dioxide, over 500 times the global average. The research also linked private jet emissions to major global events, with 3,500 flights contributing to over 35,600 tons of carbon pollution. The United States holds the majority of private jets, with over 68% of the global fleet.
