Private jet carbon emissions rise 46% from 2019 to 2023, study finds
A new study reveals that carbon pollution from private jets increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023. The study found that wealthy individuals emitted 17.2 million tons of carbon dioxide from private flights last year, equivalent to the emissions of 67 million people. The research analyzed over 18.6 million flights and highlighted that private jets contribute only 1.8% of aviation emissions. However, the study emphasizes the disproportionate impact of wealthy individuals on climate change, with some emitting over 500 times the global average. The study suggests that many private flights are unnecessary and lifestyle-related. Researchers propose implementing taxes or fees on emissions from private jets to address the issue, as the U.S. hosts the majority of the world's private aircraft.
