Private jet carbon emissions rise 46% in five years, study finds
A new study reveals that carbon emissions from private jets have increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023. Last year, wealthy individuals emitted 17.2 million tons of carbon dioxide from private flights, equivalent to the emissions of 67 million people in Tanzania. The study analyzed over 18.6 million flights and found that private jets contribute to 1.8% of aviation emissions. The highest emitter recorded released over 2,600 tons of carbon dioxide, significantly exceeding the global average. Researchers suggest that many private flights are unnecessary and lifestyle-related. They propose implementing taxes or fees to address the emissions from private jets, which are most prevalent in the United States.
