Pro-Russian candidate leads in Moldova's presidential election amid claims of Russian interference
Alexandr Stoianoglo, a candidate backed by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, has taken a narrow lead in Moldova's presidential election run-off against pro-EU leader Maia Sandu. Preliminary results show Stoianoglo with 50.5% of the vote, while Sandu has 49.5%. Moldova's national security adviser reported significant Russian interference in the election, which Russia has denied. Voting ended with a 54% turnout, higher than in previous elections, particularly among expatriates. Stoianoglo, who has promised to strengthen ties with Russia, performed well in rural areas, while Sandu led in urban regions. The final election results are expected on Monday.
