Problem gambling in Ireland is much more widespread
The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland has revealed that problem gambling is ten times more prevalent than previously estimated. New data shows 3.1% of people face significant harm, with an additional 7% experiencing moderate harm. The authority, established earlier this month, will oversee licensing and regulation of both online and in-shop gambling. It aims to create a national gambling exclusion register and enforce strict advertising rules. Licensing for gambling firms will replace the old system, with fines for violations reaching up to €20 million. The authority plans to be self-financing within three years through application and annual fees.
