Proposal to allow vehicles in Cubbon Park faces opposition
A proposal to open Cubbon Park to vehicles on weekends has faced strong opposition in the Legislative Council. BJP member D.S. Arun suggested allowing traffic after 10 a.m. on weekends to help ease congestion on nearby major roads like M.G. Road and Kasturba Road. Currently, Cubbon Park is closed to vehicles on weekends and public holidays. Vehicles are allowed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Congress member B.K. Hariprasad objected to the proposal, emphasizing the park's role as a habitat for birds and other wildlife. He argued that closing the park to traffic is crucial for protecting these animals. In response, House Leader and Minor Irrigation Minister N.S. Bose Raju noted that a meeting in January decided to allow only emergency vehicles, such as fire trucks and ambulances, to pass through the park on weekends and holidays.
