Prosecutors considering murder charges in Dobbin case
Simon Dobbin, a Cambridge United fan, was attacked in Southend-on-Sea a decade ago. He had just watched a match and was enjoying a drink with friends when a group of hooligans assaulted him. The attack left him with severe brain injuries, and he later died in 2020. On March 21, 2015, Dobbin was among supporters who traveled to see Cambridge United play Southend United. After the game ended in a goalless draw, he and his friends were attacked while walking to the train station. The incident lasted about 90 seconds, during which Dobbin suffered catastrophic injuries. Thirteen men were already sentenced for their roles in the attack before Dobbin's death prompted a murder investigation. Four men, aged in their 30s and 40s, are still under investigation. Police handed a file to prosecutors in late 2024, suggesting that charges of murder may be filed against at least one of them. In response to the attack, Dobbin's wife, Nicole, started a campaign for "Simon's law." This proposed law would require individuals convicted of violent disorder to make lifelong payments to the NHS. So far, her petition has gathered over 291,000 signatures. The Cambridge United community has also come together to remember Dobbin. During their upcoming match, supporters will sing in his honor at the 10th minute. The club aims to pay tribute to him after the brutal attack that changed his and his family's lives forever.
