Protests in Manhattan following Columbia student's arrest
Protests erupted in Manhattan after the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Khalil was taken from his residence on Saturday, with his student visa and green card revoked. Around 1,000 demonstrators gathered in Union Square on Monday, calling the arrest political oppression. A federal judge has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday to address Khalil's detention and halted his deportation until further notice. Activists and academics criticized the arrest, claiming it targets Khalil for his political views. Khalil is believed to be the first international student arrested under a new policy aimed at deporting those involved in protests against the Gaza conflict.
