Public Domain Day 2025 to unlock works by Hemingway, Hitchcock, and characters like Popeye and Tintin

Public Domain Day on January 1, 2025, will see works from 1929, including literature, music, and films, become free for public use. Notable releases include works by Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Alfred Hitchcock, along with characters like Popeye and Tintin. Popeye's public domain status allows creators to use the character, including his iconic spinach power, despite initial limitations. The 1931 comic strip that first referenced spinach is also public domain, enabling new interpretations of the character. Tintin will enter the U.S. public domain, but remains copyrighted in the E.U. until 2054. Other works, such as T.S. Eliot's "Ash Wednesday" and Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," will also be available for adaptation.
