Public trust in judiciary declining, says former CJI
Former Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana, spoke about declining public trust in the judiciary during a law conference in Chennai on March 22, 2025. He addressed the gathering at the “Justice Unplugged: Shaping the Future of Law” event, organized by VIT School of Law and The Hindu. Justice Ramana noted that many citizens now hesitate to approach the courts. They fear delays and difficulties in accessing legal services. He pointed out other concerns, such as the lack of proper infrastructure, many unfilled positions in the judicial system, and issues with transparency. The former Chief Justice highlighted the need for reform, especially for marginalized groups. He proposed that the legal system should be “Indianized.” This means using local languages in legal proceedings to make the justice system more understandable and accessible for everyone.
