Puducherry government seeks approval for Karaikal medical college
The Puducherry government is waiting for approval from the Central government to set up a new medical college in the Karaikal region. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy stated this during an Assembly session on March 18, 2025. He emphasized the government's commitment to improving medical facilities in Karaikal. Rangasamy mentioned that the proposed medical college would be located in Thirunallar. The government has formally requested permission from the Centre and plans to proceed with the establishment once they receive clearance. In addition, the Chief Minister announced plans to recruit 276 nurses for the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute. The recruitment process will begin after getting the necessary approval from the Finance Department. Currently, the facility has only 147 nurses, which the Chief Minister noted is insufficient for effective patient care. Meanwhile, Home Minister A. Namassivayam, who also oversees the Electricity portfolio, reported on plans to recruit 76 Junior Engineers in the Electricity Department. He stated that the hiring process will begin shortly, and the new engineers will work in both rural and urban areas of Puducherry.
