The National Archives of India is digitizing over 7 million pages from the Puducherry Record Centre. The project aims to make these archival documents available online through the Abhilekh Patal portal. Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced that the digitisation will be completed in two years. This will help scholars and researchers access historical records more easily. The work began on March 28, 2024, and includes steps for preservation and conservation. The Minister also mentioned improvements to the Puducherry Record Centre. New preservation techniques are being introduced to modernize the facility. This includes upgrading research and conservation rooms, as well as digitisation facilities. Additionally, efforts are being made to acquire more private archives, palm leaf manuscripts, and historical documents from donors.
