Pune activists praise PMC's decision against tax amnesty

Activists and political leaders are pleased with the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) decision not to introduce a property tax amnesty scheme. They believe such a scheme would benefit tax defaulters at the expense of honest taxpayers. As the financial year comes to a close, there has been no announcement of an amnesty program. Civic activist Vivek Velenkar expressed concerns about fairness. He said that regular taxpayers pay their property taxes promptly, while defaulters would wait until the last minute, taking advantage of the proposed scheme. Velenkar also highlighted that many defaulters often cheat the system. He requested that the PMC ensure the scheme would not allow individuals to benefit multiple times. He hopes the PMC has listened to their concerns by not announcing the amnesty. BJP leader Ujwal Keskar added that the scheme was unfair to those who pay their taxes properly and would hurt the PMC’s revenue. He is relieved that the PMC seems to have given up on the idea. Activist Sudhir Kulkarni mentioned that despite pressure from some political figures to introduce the scheme, many are against it. Meanwhile, the head of the property tax department, Madhav Jagtap, has unexpectedly gone on leave as the financial year approaches its end.
