Pune authority to expedite rape survivor's compensation request
Pune: The Pune District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) is set to meet next week to discuss a compensation request from a rape survivor at the Swargate bus depot. Officials expect a decision to be reached within seven days after the meeting. The survivor's lawyers filed for compensation, highlighting the severe mental trauma she endured, which has affected her confidence, self-esteem, and income. The application explains that she is currently unemployed. Sonal Patil, a judge and secretary of PDLSA, stated that they have received the application and will conduct a meeting to address it. The team aims to disburse the compensation quickly afterward. The incident in question occurred on February 25, when the 26-year-old preoperative counsellor was allegedly raped by an attacker in a bus at the depot. Her legal representatives emphasized the significant psychological harm caused by the incident, leading to her financial vulnerability. Advocate Asim Sarode mentioned that the survivor faces multiple trips to various authorities, adding to her expenses. He stressed the importance of the Manodhairya Scheme in aiding the survivor’s rehabilitation. The Manodhairya Scheme, established in December 2017 by the Maharashtra government, provides financial support and rehabilitation for victims of serious crimes like rape and child abuse. Over the past seven years, more than 1,500 survivors have applied for aid through PDLSA, with many receiving a total of Rs9.13 crore in assistance. This scheme has previously helped victims of high-profile cases, giving compensation ranging from Rs2 lakh to Rs10 lakh based on the case's severity.
