Pune experiences surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases
Pune has reported a significant rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in early 2025, with 141 cases logged so far, nearing the total annual cases of 2023 and 2024. Health officials link the outbreak to contaminated water, especially in the Sinhgad Road area. The surge began on January 9, affecting areas like Nande Gaon and Khadakwasla. Of the 141 cases, 120 have been confirmed as GBS, with nine suspected deaths. Most patients have been discharged, but 17 remain hospitalized. Health officials have implemented measures to control the outbreak, including mapping cases and ensuring safe water supply. Awareness campaigns on hygiene are also underway to prevent further spread.
