Pune increases traffic fines to combat reckless driving

Pune has announced new, stricter traffic fines starting from March 1, 2025. These fines have increased significantly, aiming to reduce reckless driving in the city. Penalties for serious offences such as drunk driving, not wearing a helmet, and using mobile phones while driving are now much higher. For example, the fine for drunk driving can reach up to Rs 10,000 and possible imprisonment for six months. The new fines include: - Drunk Driving: Old fine was Rs 1,000; new fine is Rs 10,000 and/or 6 months in prison. - Riding Without a Helmet: Old fine was Rs 100; new fine is Rs 1,000, with a 3-month licence suspension. - Seat Belt Violation: Old fine was Rs 100; new fine is Rs 1,000. - Using a Mobile Phone: Old fine was Rs 500; new fine is Rs 5,000. Other violations like driving without valid insurance and dangerous driving will also see heavy fines ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 or imprisonment. Offences committed by juveniles could lead to fines of Rs 25,000, plus severe penalties. These changes reflect Pune’s effort to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents. Drivers are urged to comply with the new rules to avoid facing hefty fines.
