Pune police destroy 788kg of seized drugs
Pune police destroyed a large amount of drugs on Tuesday, which were valued at about Rs 7.76 crore. This took place at a private facility in Ranjangaon MIDC after getting the required approvals from the courts. The drugs had been seized from 75 different cases throughout 2024. The collection of drugs included various types such as brown sugar, opium, LSD, and marijuana. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar noted that the items had been held in police stations since the seizures during raids conducted across the city last year. Marijuana was the most common drug seized, totaling 758 kg, much of which came from states like Karnataka and Telangana. Other drugs seized included ephedrine, cocaine, LSD, hashish, opium, heroin, and "bunta" tablets. The destruction process required a court order, and it was conducted in the presence of a drug disposal committee and senior police officials. The police revealed that investigations pointed to an active smuggling network in Pune and surrounding cities, particularly for marijuana and mephedrone. In total, Pune police have previously seized over 1,800 kg of mephedrone, worth more than Rs 3,600 crore. This substance is also expected to be destroyed soon. Commissioner Kumar emphasized their ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking operations through consistent law enforcement actions.
