Pune police launch drone program for crime monitoring
Pune police have acquired five advanced drones to help monitor crime hotspots in the city. This move is part of a larger surveillance project costing ₹466 crore. Officials announced that a new command center has also been set up to oversee this initiative. The drones will assist in tracking criminals and ensuring public safety. Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar explained that the system will use AI technology to accurately identify trouble areas and suspects. The drones include thermal imaging cameras to enhance surveillance efforts. This initiative comes after a serious incident in October 2024, where a gang-rape occurred at Bopdev Ghat. The police are also installing new AI-equipped CCTV cameras across the city, with plans to add 1,500 cameras in the first phase of the project. A total of 2,866 cameras will eventually be installed. Law enforcement aims to address various crimes such as robbery, assault, and traffic issues using this advanced surveillance system. The AI-enabled cameras will also help monitor public safety in busy areas and keep an eye on known criminals.
