Pune sees fewer pigeon feeding fines after campaigns

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has seen a significant drop in fines for feeding pigeons. In February 2025, only two people were fined, compared to six in January and 52 in December 2024. Officials believe that awareness campaigns warning about health risks linked to pigeon droppings are making a difference. The fine for feeding pigeons was introduced in December last year, with penalties ranging from Rs 500 for a first offence to Rs 5,000 for repeat offenders. Many people, including children and young adults, feed pigeons as a hobby or for entertainment. Officials are working to educate citizens about the dangers of this practice. Housing societies are actively promoting awareness about the health risks associated with bird droppings. Residents are receiving information through handouts, banners, and social media. One resident noted that while many feed pigeons with good intentions, they may not realize they could be spreading diseases. PMC is monitoring areas where people commonly feed pigeons, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Sandip Kadam, head of the solid waste management department, stated that awareness teams are patrolling these spots to discourage feeding. They are addressing misguided beliefs that feeding birds brings good luck. Despite the decline in fines, some residents still observe people feeding pigeons openly. There are calls for more consistent enforcement from the administration. The issue gained attention last year after a woman in Mumbai developed a severe lung condition due to pigeon droppings, which ultimately required a lung transplant.
