Punjab amends RTE Act to enhance student admissions
The Punjab cabinet has approved changes to education rules to help students from weaker and underprivileged backgrounds. This decision aims to improve access to quality education in private schools across the state. The cabinet agreed to amend the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011. This change removes certain restrictions that previously limited admission for these students. Under the Right to Education Act, private schools are required to reserve 25% of their seats for students from economically weaker sections. Last month, the Punjab and Haryana high court confirmed that admissions in private schools must follow the RTE Act of 2009, rather than the 2011 rules. The court instructed state officials to follow this directive for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. In addition to education changes, the cabinet also decided to amend the Transfer of Prisoner Act of 1950. This amendment will allow for the transfer of under-trial prisoners between states, but only with the agreement of both states involved. Officials believe this will help reduce overcrowding in Punjab's jails.
