Punjab police officers suspended after man's suicide

An inspector and a constable in Jalandhar, Punjab, have been suspended after a young man took his own life shortly after being released from police custody. The young man was detained during a police raid in his neighborhood, where authorities were looking into possible drug trafficking. Inspector Harinder Singh, the station house officer, and constable Jaspal Singh were ordered to report to the local police lines. This decision came from police commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur. The victim's family claims that after his release, constable Singh continued to call the young man and demanded money. The family reported that they ended up paying ₹ 35,000 to the constable. The young man ended his life the following evening. In response, his family protested outside the police station, which led to the suspension of the officers. They are now calling for a formal investigation and the registration of a criminal case against the police personnel involved.
