Punjab Police transfers seven detainees for trial
Punjab Police has successfully transferred seven members of the Waris Punjab De organization from Dibrugarh jail. The detainees were held for two years under the National Security Act (NSA). They are accused of involvement in the Ajnala police station attack. The transfer was completed on Wednesday after three days of coordinated efforts by a 25-member Punjab Police team. The team, led by SP Harinder Singh Gill, obtained the transit remand from a local court in Dibrugarh. This included three detainees on Wednesday, following the transfer of four others earlier in the week. Now, all seven members are in the custody of Punjab Police and will be airlifted to Punjab for trial. The exact timing of this airlift is not yet confirmed. Meanwhile, they are being supervised by both Assam and Punjab Police at the Dibrugarh Police station. A senior police official noted that the process was thorough to ensure all legal requirements were satisfied. These detainees are set to be formally arrested upon their arrival in Punjab, where they will face the charges related to their alleged role in the attack. Three other members of Waris Punjab De remain in Dibrugarh jail, including the group's head, Amritpal Singh. The members were transferred to Dibrugarh jail in different batches over the past year. Notably, Amritpal Singh was elected to the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections while still in custody.
