Putin announces test of new missile amid ongoing conflict with Ukraine
Vladimir Putin announced that Russia has tested a new intermediate-range missile, named Oreshnik, in a strike on Ukraine. He claimed the missile can reach speeds of Mach 10 and warned it could be used against NATO countries supplying weapons to Ukraine. Putin's statement followed Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using Western missiles. He indicated that Russia would provide advance warnings before future attacks to protect civilians. Ukraine reported that Russia launched a missile at Dnipro, which U.S. officials assessed as an intermediate-range ballistic missile. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the missile's characteristics resembled those of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Ukraine's air force claimed to have intercepted six of the nine missiles fired, with two people reported injured in the attack.
