Putin expands conditions for nuclear weapon use in new decree
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree expanding the conditions under which Russia may use nuclear weapons. This change comes as the conflict in Ukraine reaches its 1,000th day and follows U.S. approval for Ukraine to use long-range missiles. The new doctrine states that Russia may consider nuclear action against non-nuclear states if they are supported by nuclear powers. It also allows for a nuclear response to significant air attacks, even if only conventional weapons are used. Additionally, the updated policy extends Russia's nuclear protection to Belarus. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the changes align with current threats and reaffirmed Russia's view of nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
